Anxiety and the Christian Soul – Psalm 131

Psalm 131 (ESV)
A Song of Ascents. Of David.

1 O Lord, my heart is not lifted up;
my eyes are not raised too high;
I do not occupy myself with things
too great and too marvelous for me.
2 But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child is my soul within me.
3 O Israel, hope in the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore.

    You kind of hinted to it towards the end, but you do realize that the Bible says that fear is in relation to punishment. I know I used to be horribly anxious when I was doing a lot of bad things, and that is why.
    I don’t fear anymore and it is probably because I have confessed virtually almost all of my sins to people.

    Hope that helps.

    Paul! Thank you for the comment. I’m so glad to hear that you’re fearless!

    Do you think it is possible for Christians who are not ‘doing a lot of bad things’ to still feel fear and anxiety?

    So, alright, look. The Bible talks about how fear is in relation to punishment,

    One example of this would be the account of Adam and Eve after they ate the fruit from the tree that GOD had commanded them not to eat.

    Genesis 3:10 King James Version (KJV)

    10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

    Why was Adam afraid? Well, because he knew that he had done something wrong.

    This verse is interesting:

    Proverbs 22:7 (King James Version)
    7 The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.

    So if someone is anxious about money, and that person is borrowing money, then that person’s anxiety could be in relation to the money that that person is borrowing. Thus, if that person were to stop borrowing money, then that would, thus, relieve the anxiety that is caused by the borrowing of the money that is being borrowed.

    To end,
    Since fear is in relation to punishment, if a CHRISTian is experiencing fear, then that CHRISTian should seriously look at their life and see where they are messing up at. Maybe that CHRISTian needs to talk to other CHRISTians and have the other CHRISTians get a good look into that CHRISTian’s life.

    I really enjoyed your sermon, I finally had the chance to sit down and listen to it last night. I agree with almost everything you’ve said and really enjoy the truck and tractor analogy.

    I hope you continue to do well and look forward to hearing another sermon in the future.
